Writing a proposal to use Nuclear Fusion instead of other energy sources

Page Count: No more than 3 pages (single spaced)
Memo Format: To/From/Subject/Date – Addressed to me
Overview of Assignment
Workplace proposals are common forms of business writing that you will likely be asked to do in
your future job. Some proposals are informal and may be as simple as an email to your boss
requesting vacation leave. Other proposals are semi-formal or highly formal and require a cover
page, letter of transmittal, front matter/back matter, and appendices. In any case, it is important
that you know how to structure a proposal for the specific rhetorical situation and effectively
persuade your reader to accept your proposed ideas.
In this assignment, you will write a project proposal to me. Your goal is to convince me to accept
your research topic and research plan for the project idea (white paper report) in this course.
In this assignment, you will ideally develop more deeply the ideas from your Audience Analysis
& Oral Presentation of Project Idea. However, if you changed topics this is okay too – just be
sure to develop the new topic idea to meet the major components of this proposal.
Purpose of Assignment: Skills Practiced and Knowledge Gained
• Students should know and demonstrate the conventions of a technical document (e.g.
long-form technical report, short-form proposal, progress report, oral report).
• Students should justify rhetorical decisions made in their technical documents (e.g.
completion memos, letters of transmittal, front/back matter, appendices).
• Students should be able to write with correct grammar, spelling, and syntax.
• Students should be able to work with visuals effectively (e.g. creating original graphs,
charts and images; incorporating creative-commons/open-licensed images; citing images
used in references).
• Students should compose in discrete steps, following a process of planning, drafting,
revising, and finalizing.
• Students should use evidence that meets the needs of their purpose, context and their
audience.

show this information comes from outside research – so, include directly quoted,
paraphrased, or summarized content from research. Be sure to cite these sources in APA

❏ Explanation of who your expert reviewer will be (What are the expert’s credentials,
degrees, length in the field, etc.?)
❏ Listed annotated bibliography for these three sources. (Do not put these in the References
list – as you have not actually cited materials from them; rather you are presenting them
as possible sources of information for further research with a brief summary of the ideas
in the source you plan to use and an assessment of the source’s credibility.)
Project Timeline
❏ Table format – explanation of the how you will accomplish completing the
research/project (this should use the course schedule/deadlines and show the major tasks

important to get correct now, as they are used in the progress report later).
